The prime universe is the universe containing such governments as the long since conquered Terran Empire and the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.
It was discovered in 2267 by Imperial Starfleet captain James Tiberius Kirk that it was, in fact, not the only universe in existence when he and his senior staff of the Imperial starship Enterprise were thrown into the mirror universe and were replaced by their weak counterparts from there in the prime universe.
